MLB hot stove: Manny Machado met with Padres GM this week, report says Bryce Harper deal was in place, Astros GM says: ‘It didn’t happen. So we moved on’ For a team last season that reportedly didn’t do well with the addition of older players such as Wilson Ramos and Jose Bautista, it could concern fans what high-profile players like a Machado or Harper would do to the young roster’s chemistry as there will be more scrutiny in Philadelphia with either of these two All-Stars.Kapler, for one, isn’t concerned. Manny Machado and Bryce Harper are still on the open market and Gabe Kapler is dreaming of what might be.The Phillies manager told reporters Saturday how he would manage the addition of either player to his lineup. “I would handle it the way I would handle any other major challenge, by throwing all of my energy and effort into supporting a superstar player and raising the bar for them simultaneously,” Kapler said, via The Athletic. “Those are two things we can do around here very well — support players and raise the bar for them. I don’t think you can do one without the other. I don’t think you can ask or challenge a player to do things differently if you don’t first come with a high degree of support and care.”The Phillies still very much would like to add one of the players, and according to MLB analyst Jim Bowden, they would take either player at this point and neither is truly a favorite. The idea of boundaries is, let’s look out for each other, let’s challenge each other to set the highest possible standards as a group. If I’m not doing enough or holding up my end of the bargain, hold me accountable. Hold up an accurate mirror for me.”Machado and Harper remain unsigned but both players are drawing interest from the White Sox and Padres in addition to the Phillies. There are other teams hoping to sign them too, but at this point, it’s hard to tell which way either player is leaning or who will pick them up.
