first_imgThursday Mar 10, 2011 Classic Encounters – Scotland vs England, Calcutta Cup 1990 In the lead up to this weekends game we take a look back to the 1990 Five Nations decider at Murrayfield, a classic match that will be remembered as much for the upset on the field, as for the pride achieved off it.It was a winner takes all encounter, as the Five Nations and Grand Slam were up for grabs, and the underdog Scots could sniff blood. It was a powerful England side and amidst the backdrop of political turmoil, there was a special feeling at Murrayfield.Having beaten Ireland in a tight game in Dublin, Scotland then thrashed the French 21-0 in Edinburgh, before narrowly beating the Welsh 13-9 in Cardiff. This set up the Murrayfield decider against England, with the winners being in line to claim the Calcutta Cup, the Five Nations Championship, the Triple Crown, and of course, the Grand Slam. The Scots used the perceived English arrogance to build up the hype leading into the game, as Will Carling and his troops appeared to believe they could just turn up and win. When David Sole led his team out onto the park with a now famous walk, it became all to clear that this was going to be no walkover for the favourites. This documentary takes you through the emotions superbly, as we get to hear from some of those involved in the historic event, learn more about the political angst leading up to it, and get to watch as Scotland achieved one of their most famous victories. The documentary is 28 minutes long and presented in two parts below. Its well worth watching, even if youre a neutral, as its a wonderful piece of rugby history. I hope you enjoy it. first_imgAssistant Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology Fernando Camargo, Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) Alexander Gimelbrant, and Sun Hur, assistant professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at HMS, have been named 2010 Pew Scholars in the biomedical sciences by the Pew Charitable Trusts. The Pew Scholars program enables scientists to take calculated risks, expand their research, and explore unanticipated leads. It provides $240,000 over four years.Camargo will study how tumor growth is inhibited in a tissue-wide context. Using a mouse model, Camargo and his team are determining whether mechanisms controlling tissue size act as critical regulators of tumor growth. Camargo’s research has focused studies on the Hippo pathway of genes to test this model. Using a range of molecular biological techniques and ribonucleic acid (RNA) interference screens, Camargo hopes to identify novel regulators of a signaling pathway known as the Hippo pathway and to then determine their role as tumor suppressor genes.Gimelbrant’s laboratory will investigate how establishment of cell identity can be determined by the choice of which allele, maternal or paternal, will be expressed in a given cell lineage. He and his team have shown that this type of allelic choice occurs with many hundreds of human genes, creating an extraordinary epigenetic diversity in cell populations, such as those in the immune and nervous system. Gimelbrant’s team uses and develops a variety of approaches, including allele-specific arrays and whole-transcriptome next-generation sequencing, in order to build a comprehensive map of allele-specific expression and the correlated chromatin states.  This effort is under way in both human and mouse cells to gain an insight into the evolutionary context of allelic silencing.Hur’s research focuses on how the immune system detects viruses. She studies how RNAs are protected by the immune system, while viral RNAs, those made by viruses, are attacked by the immune system. Both types of RNA are made of the same four molecules. Using a combination of structural and biochemical techniques with computational modeling, Hur will investigate how immune systems distinguish between these two types of RNA. Her work will lend insight on how to prevent autoimmune or inflammatory diseases such as type I diabetes, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. To read the complete announcement.last_img read more

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion All these shootings are by design. Why? New York state has the worst gun control in the world and the strictest laws, but yet shootings continue. The left is trying for a civil war so the government can call martial law and take control of our nation and confiscate our guns. The Democratic left will do anything to accomplish this. They hit big groups to promote fear and keep people apart. But this is what brings people together. And when the people had enough of loved ones getting shot, they’re going to go after Washington because all the gun control in the world won’t stop it. They would rather infringe on our rights than make stiffer laws for these shootings. What does that tell you?New York state already infringed on our rights and violated the Supreme Court decision that we have the right to self protection of life and property. This state broke the commerce law to allow price gouging i.e., A box of .225 rifle bullets was $1.59 for 50 rounds; today it’s $7.50 for the same box.Gov. Cuomo killed target shooting, skeet shooting, trap shooting, hunting and competition shooting. You have to buy ammo for safety. Then you have to have enough ammo for target,-hunting, skeet and trap and competition sports — but can’t afford to buy them.So the dealers raised their prices to compensate for the lost revenue. Make up your mind if you’re going to buy into this corruption or stand your ground for your rights. To support socialism and communism is to be controlled by the government. Capitalism is freedom.Socialist and communist — if you don’t abide by the laws, they kill you, with no protection. Russia, North Korea, Iran and others are proof of their work. Support Trump. Congress doesn’t want to make stiffer laws.
