This time, we’re talking choices, external link warnings, and, because it’s my top pet-peeve, passwords again!More Options Is Always Better“Enjoy checking…with choice! Find the account which matches your needs from our 5 different plans. They’re basically all the same, besides a 0.01% dividend. But who cares…options are essential!”I get the concept: By creating a solution for every possible need, you can appeal to any potential member. Thus, your membership potential isn’t any one category, it’s humans (and sometimes even that is stretched…why can’t your dog share in savings?). Now that I’m thinking about it, savings account for your pets is pretty cool. You could put away for their essentials, vet bills, unexpected challenges, and more. It’s like a savings goal but separated in a fun way. Ok, that one is excluded.Where was I? Oh, yes, choices. My business works primarily with the auto lending side of credit unions. In it, there is one main goal: Encourage the member to get pre-approved. However, people look for a car before a loan (unless they have no clue what they can afford/finance). As a result, many credit unions set up car-buying resources. They include calculators, lengthy PDF guides, and external company links. In many cases, they’re not even affiliated with those outside links! (Keep this in mind, it comes up later) What are you doing? Keep it simple! One link to do the fun “build/find a car” with a partner program (Disclosure: My company offers exactly this) and another to get pre-approved. Those outside company links? They often have their own financing programs. Bye bye loan (or ever knowing that member is looking to buy a car).You may have heard of the “Paradox of Choice”. Give someone too many options and they’ll never make any decision. In fact, new research shows that this isn’t 100% true (science doubts itself always, boys and girls). What they found was that better options are better. More options for the sake of options makes people do one of two things: 1) Never decide and do nothing or 2) Decide based on meaningless factors (possibly because the important ones are hard to understand or not immediately obvious). If you must offer options, make sure they are equally good and clearly different.External Link Warnings Keep Members SafeA vestige of the World Wide Web’s “dark ages”, these are pop-up messages telling the browser that they are now leaving so-and-so’s website, and they cannot guarantee their safety, security, or that delivery will be in 30 minutes or less. You don’t need them. Many credit union legal teams claim they are mandated, but the only reference I’ve ever uncovered is a non-binding NCUA guidance from 2003. That’s Pi, or pre-iPhone. Weather widgets, local news scrollers, and other useless distractions were commonplace on most websites. Sure, if someone was clicking from their online banking to see what the latest news is in Anytown, USA, yeah, I’d want to ensure it was clear that site isn’t us.You’ve learned a lot since then.And if you’re that worried about where you are sending members, why send them there? (Remember the post Trusted Partners!) I’ve seen external link warnings on links to NCUA, loan applications, and more. You have legally-binding agreements with these partners or providers! It gives me the feeling these credit unions just said, “The world is a scary place. Let’s terrify our members, too. Oh, and make sure they never use our products.”Alright, your legal team insists the warnings are necessary. Can’t argue. Just make them friendlier! Instead of a long text field in legalese, create a bright-colored, concise text notice. “Hey, just so you know, this link goes to someone we work with. They’re great, but we have to let you know they might have different policies on privacy than us. Click here to continue or just wait 5 seconds and we’ll get you on your way!”Simple, friendly, and still accurate. Always remember your mission. You’re people serving people. The second you adopt the terminology people associate with “big banks”, you’re no different.So, instead of slapping warnings on every link, be diligent in working with people and companies who truly share your mission. Then you don’t need to warn anyone about anything. And, if it’s essential, be nice about it.Passwords With Symbols Are Most SecureWe covered this in passing last time. But since the focus was on changing passwords, I want to cover this independently. Your password doesn’t need to go to the gym. And no, your password doesn’t even lift, bro.Password strength is determined by how hard it is for a computer to figure it out, strictly by guessing. And you know the easiest way to make it really hard? Length. Not symbols. Not using aLterNatinG cases. Not replacing 13tt3rs with numbers. Sheer length. Here’s that amazing xkcd comic to explain why, once again.If my password was “GoshIneverrememberpasswordsnomatterwhattheyare”, I can guarantee you, no computer in existence today will ever crack it. Yet you’ve already memorized it.Many recent password leaks have had passwords figured out because the security they used was garbage. I can’t help you there. Insist their system gets an outside security audit regularly, and, if they’re responsive, ask if they’re using salted password hashes. first_imgThe St. Louis Track and Field teams competed Wednesday night against South Ripley and Jac-Cen-Del.  The girls finished first with 47 points followed by Jac-Cen-Del with 43 points and South Ripley with 36 points.All eight of the girls scored this evening making this a great team win.  The girls roster is made up of Molly Wachsmann, Mindy Eckstein, Leila Savage, Grace Mack, Caroline Meer, Pamela Meneses, Stacy Kramer and Grace Laudick.The boys finished third with only 28 points.  South Ripley was first with 60 points and Jac-Cen-Del finished second with 38 points.  Scorers for the boys team were Joshua Myers, Adam Moster, Benjamin Moster, Zachary Harmeyer, Nicholas Meer, Michael Wanstrath, Tyler Kuntz, Max Giesting, Hunter Laudick and Luke Wilson.Special recognition goes to Joshua Myers for breaking his 1600 meter run school record again with a time of 4:56.6.  Molly Wachsmann also broke a school record this evening with a throw of 27’2” in the shot put.  The boys 4×400 meter relay team ran 4:11.3 tonight just missing the school record of 4:10.0.  The relay team members were Benjamin Moster, Zachary Harmeyer, Adam Moster and Joshua Myers.The Cardinals will be participating in the CYO meet in Indianapolis next Friday and Saturday with finals on Wednesday, May 18th.Courtesy of Cardinals Coach John Harmeyer.last_img read more

first_img19 December 2007MIH Internet, a wholly owned subsidiary of South African media group Naspers, has made a £946-million (about R13.1-billion) offer to acquire London-listed Tradus, which operates online trading platforms and other related internet service websites in 12 mainly Eastern European countries.The acquisition would be the largest so far by Africa’s largest media company, which has to date been buying minority stakes in media and internet-related companies in emerging markets.Tradus, established as QXL Ricardo plc in 1997, operates auction websites in Eastern Europe under various brand names, and in Poland they operate automotive and real estate classified sites, a price comparison site and payment services system.“In its own strategy, Naspers has prioritised the internet sector for expansion. Success has been achieved in the sub-segments offering users communications, social networking and community platforms,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.“In pursuit of this strategy, Naspers today has various internet investments on the African continent, in China, Russia and India. first_img27 March 2013 South African state oil company PetroSA and China’s Sinopec Group took another step towards creating Africa’s largest oil refinery after the two firms signed an agreement in Pretoria on Tuesday. The US$10-billion Mthombo refinery project is planned for the Coega Industrial Development Zone outside Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The agreement, signed during a meeting between President Jacob Zuma and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Pretoria on Tuesday, will create opportunities for oil and gas exploration. Jinping is in South Africa for the 5th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit, which got under way in Durban on Tuesday. “The framework agreement enables the two companies to move forward this global-scale crude oil refinery project,” the two chairmen, PetroSA’s Benny Mokaba and Sinopec’s Fu Chengyu, said in a statement. According to Business Day, the refinery would pump approximately 360 000 barrels per day, while creating 27 500 direct and indirect jobs during construction and 18 000 jobs when it started operating. The agreement follows the signing of a study agreement between the two companies in May last year. Mokaba described the agreement as an important building block in bringing the project to fruition. “[It] gives PetroSA the opportunity to extend a mutually beneficial relationship with a major national oil company,” he said. “This strategic relationship can and will be leveraged to benefit PetroSA’s sustainability and growth programmes.” As part of their growth plans, the companies agreed to include the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) in the next phase of the project’s development. Downstream opportunities in southern Africa will also be explored, as will the development of storage and logistical infrastructure. “South Africa is politically stable and economically developed,” Fu said. “Sinopec pays close attention to its business growth in South Africa, and wishes to contribute to local economic and social development.” SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

That usually means rigid foam and furring strips — although occasionally, it means mineral wool insulation and furring strips.But there are other options. Two new products offer builders new ways to keep their wall sheathing warm.InSoFast panels — rectangles of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam with embedded plastic “studs” that hold drywall screws — have been around for years. The product was developed as a quick and convenient way for homeowners to insulate the interior of basement walls. The company’s original product (the InSoFast UX 2.0 panel) is 2 inches thick and rated at R-8.5.InSoFast is now promoting a thicker panel, the InSoFast EX 2.5 panel, for use on the exterior of wall sheathing. (In many ways, the InSoFast EX 2.5 panels resemble the Quad-Lock R-etro system. For more on Quad-Lock R-etro, see my review in the fourth issue of GBA’s Insider magazine. GBA also lists the Quad-Lock R-etro system in our Green Products Guide.)Each InSoFast EX 2.5 panel measures 24 inches by 48 inches by 2 1/2 inches thick. The EPS has a density of 1.25 pounds per cubic foot. The panels have tongue-and-groove joints around the perimeter that are described as “self-flashing.” While these joints are designed to shed water, the foam panels have not been approved for use as a water-resistive barrier (WRB), so builders will still need to install a layer of housewrap or asphalt felt to protect the wall sheathing.The new 2 1/2-inch-thick panels have several features that differ from the original 2-inch panels designed for interior use:While the interior panels only have to support gypsum drywall, the new exterior panels have to be strong enough to support siding. Hubert Minnis said Wednesday.Just last week, the Prime Minister proposed the construction of a National Museum of The Bahamas not only for the benefit of Bahamians, but also as a heritage experience for tourists. The Prime Minister said the construction of a National Museum of The Bahamas would reap great dividends for the country.On Wednesday (June 21), Prime Minister Minnis said whether the National Museum of The Bahamas will be constructed as a free-standing facility or through the renovation of existing space at “Centreville” (where the Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation is currently located in the old Ministry of Education Headquarters Compound on Shirley Street and Collins Avenue) is a matter that will be up for discussion with officials at the Corporation which is headed by Dr. Keith Tinker, Ph.D., Director of the National Museum of The Bahamas, the Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation (AMMC).“The Bahamas has great potential in terms of our history and our historic sites and we have to grasp the opportunity,” Prime Minister Minnis said. “It’s unfortunate they (Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation) do not have a proper museum within which to display that history. That must be dealt with as we move forward because Bahamians are losing a lot of their history.“We must see to it that a proper museum is either constructed or renovated in order to give Bahamians and visitors alike an opportunity to see these artifacts being displayed properly so that they will be able to get a glimpse into our great Bahamian history.“Whether we will construct a free standing museum or renovate what is here now, is a discussion they and I will have going forward, but the bottom line is we must have a proper museum to display the various artifacts found within The Bahamas – plus its an excellent attraction for both tourists and residents.”Prime Minister Minnis made his comments while visiting facilities at the site of the Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation. The tour was part of the Prime Minister’s ongoing familiarization visits to government corporations, ministries and departments that fall under the purview of the Office of the Prime Minister.Prime Minister Minnis’ most recent visit was to the Department of Lands and Surveys. Officials there say it was the first time a Minister at any level had visited the Department in almost thirty years. I think it has a great role to play in terms of attracting cruise and airlift tourists to our shores and expanding economic opportunities for Bahamians while also increasing revenue,” Prime Minister Minnis said.“Ours is a richly textured culture. Our history, music, food, dance, art, craft and our folkways are distinctly different. Individuals can have great ideas, but not necessarily the resources. Government’s responsibility should be to create opportunities for them so that you can create wealth, but not confine it (wealth) to one location.
