Stop judging the Founders on morals

first_imgOn April 29, Karen Cookson invited thoughts about her Thomas Jefferson column. Truthfully, I’m sick of the pedantry and moral preening involved in opinions that Thomas Jefferson — and by extension 12 of our first 18 presidents who held slaves — is somehow “morally unfit to be president.” I sincerely wish those who espouse selective historical analyses would cease, for two reasons.First, there’s no moral test for the office of president. Do we have the right to question the electors from the Electoral College of another age? Or the successive Congresses that failed to impeach and remove “morally unfit” presidents from office?Refusal to acknowledge that human history is complicated, filled with contradictions and inconsistencies, is adolescent puffery. Was Abraham Lincoln “morally unfit” because he thought that “blacks and whites” shouldn’t have “social and political equality?” Was JFK “morally unfit” because he was a sexual predator? Such oversimplifications have the effect of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, since all made positive contributions to our republic.Second, I worry there may be a hidden agenda involved in these high-toned revelations of past behavior. I worry that those who incessantly pick away at our Founders have as their real plan the debasement of the esteem in which Americans hold their Founders who, while not saints, did give us the most liberating system of government in the history of mankind. Those who wish to discard our Constitution must first make Americans ashamed of their Founders.Rob DicksonClifton ParkMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationControversial solar project goes before Clifton Park Planning BoardGame 7: Shenendehowa grad and Braves rookie Ian Anderson gets start with World Series spot on the li… Categories: Letters to the Editor, Opinionlast_img
